The Payap Language Software Development Group

‘palaso.org’ is the website of the Payap Language Software Development Group, part of the Linguistics Institute at Payap University in Chiangmai Thailand. The Linguistics Institute is a partnership between Payap University and SIL International with the mandate to serve the language communities of Southeast Asia through linguistic research and language development. The Palaso Group develops new software to aid linguistic research and language development.

Current Palaso developers are Cambell Prince, Tim Armstrong. John Hatton also works with Palaso from Papua New Guinea.

Current projects include:

  • WeSay - A simple and powerful dictionary building tool for non-linguists. Runs on Windows an Linux.
  • Chorus - A version control system designed to enable workflows for geographically distributed language teams.
  • Enhancements to the Enchant spell-checking engine to boost support for less-resourced languages. Any software application can hook to Enchant to enable spell checking.
  • SayMore – Organizer for Language Documentation Session data.
  • Solid - A utility for tidying SFM lexicon databases and converting to various formats, including LIFT.
  • Reusable .net libraries for supporting less-resourced languages, including advanced collation and working with LIFT xml files. (PalasoLib and LiftDotNet)
